Our patron at the Behold Project is Mother Mary in the title of “Our Lady of Sorrows.” This site is under her protection and patronage. The title of “Our Lady of Sorrows” focuses on the intense grief and suffering she felt at various points in her life, mostly during the Passion of Our Lord. The sorrows of Mary are listed below:
- The prophecy of Simeon. (St. Luke 2:34, 35)
- The flight into Egypt. (St. Matthew 2:13, 14)
- The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple. (St. Luke 2: 43-45)
- The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross.
- The Crucifixion.
- The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross.
- The burial of Jesus.
For this reason Our Lady of Sorrows is often depicted with 7 swords piercing her immaculate heart. Sometimes she is depicted with tears streaming down her face. Most importantly, she accepted all her sorrows with the same grace and humility she accepted the Annunciation, “Beheold I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done according to your word”. Our patron is the model of humility.
So why is our patron Our Lady of Sorrows? I personally believe that Mary is close to those suffering from mental illness. Mary knows what it feels like to suffer internally and to have her very soul pierced. She consoles us in all our troubles and seeks to unite them with the sufferings of her Son. As our mother wants to be with us in our suffering.
